SCHLOSSGRABENFEST
What is the Schlossgrabenfest?
Schlossgrabenfest: every year on the last weekend in May in the centre of Darmstadt right by the palace!
It’s Hesse’s largest music festival with over 80 bands. Admission is free
Since the first music festival in 1999 the last weekend in May every year sees Darmstadt’s city centre seething with some 400.000 music fans. The Hesse music festival takes over the whole of this city that is otherwise the revier of science and students.
The 20,000 m2 of open air space around Darmstadt’s Residential Palace, Friedensplatz, Ernst-Ludwigsplatz, Karolinenplatz and the Schlossgraben are all turned into Schlossgrabenfest concert venues staging a exciting mix of almost all types of music appealing both to wider audiences as well as to the youngsters.
The Schlossgrabenfest has undergone continual improvements and developments since it first began. The expansion of the number of events as well as the clear broadening of the styles of music staged has gone hand in hand with the continual increase in visitor numbers. Over 100 stands provide a wide variety of foods and drinks from all over the world catering for the needs of the thousands of visitors.
The event organisers Thiemo Gutfried and Frank Friedrich Grossmann are agreed: "It is the publc that has made the Schlossgrabenfest one of Germany’s largest music festivals. We just say a big thank you!"
